HOTEL CACAO

This small hotel is family owned and is located in downtown Bijagua, where the river by the same name is located. Additionally, it has an excellent view of the Miravalles and Tenorio volcanoes.

HISTORY OF THE NAME "CACAO"

Ka`Kaw, in Mayan is the original name given to the cocoa plant. Even though the plant originated in South America, it was the Mayan and the Olmecas who cutivated it over 2500 years ago. Used only by nobility and kings, this drink was considered to be stimulating and calming at the same time; it symbolized longer and vigorous life. Later, the Aztecs renamed it Xocolatl, the name we give to the candy and drink we enjoy today. Another common use of the cocoa seed was as a trading currency. This use was extended through the Latin American conquest and the colonial era.
